Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def) was scheduled to perform a concert last week in Boston but was stopped by airport security in South Africa. This bit of news led to a Twitter rumor that the rapper was barred from re-entering the United States.

According to information posted on Together Boston, immigration issues and legal issues prevented the 'Umi Says' rhymer from boarding his flight in South Africa.

We regret to inform you that due to immigration / legal issues Yasiin Bey is unable to enter back into the United States and his upcoming U.S. tour has been canceled, including May 15th, Together Boston’s show at The Wilbur Theatre. Individual ticket refunds for this show are available at point of sale.

For those of you who don't know, Bey moved to the continent last year and is now a permanent resident in Cape Town.

“Last year May, I came [to Cape Town] and I said I’m not leaving. I’m staying. "It’s a beautiful place,” he told the Mail & Guardian. “It has the ocean, mountain, botanical gardens and beautiful people.”

“There are some beautiful places in America. I love Brooklyn,” he added. “New York City needs to thank Brooklyn every day just for existing. That’s how I feel about it. It was a hard thing to leave home. But I’m glad I did.”

As to why Bey was forbidden to re-enter the U.S., there could be many reasons. However, there has been no statement released from his camp as to why.

Reactions to this news has been met with skepticism on Twitter.

In the meantime, watch Yasiin Bey in the trailer for ‘Life of Crime,' a film adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s novel 'The Switch' by director Dan Schechter below. The flick stars Jennifer Aniston, Will Forte and Tim Robbins.
