Wyclef to Headline Fundraiser for Haitian Journalists

Former Haitian Presidential hopeful Wyclef Jean has been announced as the headliner at a fundraiser for journalists in Haiti next week.

‘Clef will be taking the stage after performances by some of Haiti’s most beloved musicians, including Konpa pioneer (and former presidential candidate) Michel Martelly and Voodoo singer AZOR, at the Night of Solidarity for Haitian Journalists on Wednesday, Jan. 26, in Washington D.C.

In addition to the musical performances, Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive will be on hand to speak at the event, along with former presidential candidate Mirlande Manigat.

While ‘Clef voiced his dissatisfaction after being declared ineligible to run for president last year, his appearance is an apparent show of solidarity for the cause, an effort to gain support for free the press in Haiti, as the country attempts to rebuild itself after its disastrous earthquake.

In addition to the speakers and musical performances, journalist advocacy group Reporters Without Borders will be reporting on press freedom in Haiti, and there will be a silent auction works by Haitian artists. Tickets for the Night of Solidarity can be purchased here. The event begins at 7PM and ends after Wyclef’s performance, at 10PM.

Last month, Wyclef joined The BoomBox on a trip to the Urban Assembly Academy of Arts and Letters in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he turned a room full of middle school students into journalists. Check out footage from his interview and day with The Boombox below.
