Missy Elliott emerged in the mid-1990s with a distinctive flow, loads of charisma and the talent to match. Her abilities as a rapper, singer, songwriter and producer made her a formidable presence from her very first album, 1997s Supa Dupa Fly.

Over the next decade, Missy didn't seem to pause for a second; churning on acclaimed, chart-topping albums, writing and producing hits for others like Total, Keyshia Cole and Monica. When she finally took an extended hiatus around 2007, she had an entire industry of artists and producers who had been shaped in her image.

Her work with Timbaland is era-defining. They forged a sound that came to define contemporary R&B and hip-hop for the better part of a generation.

20 years into the game, it can't be overstated how much Missy means to popular music. We took a trip through her discography. Check out our ranking of Missy's albums, Worst to Best. [Gallery above]
