Before his abs and his new song, “First Day Out Tha Feds,” Gucci Mane was one of the hottest rappers in Atlanta. But it came with plenty of bumps and bruises.

In May 2005, Gucci was involved in the shooting death of Henry Lee Clark III. According to MTV News, Gucci was at a female friend’s apartment when four gunmen burst into the residence assaulted the rapper and a scuffle ensued. Gunshots were fired and the men fled the scene. Clark’s body was discovered several days later outside a nearby middle school.

Gucci later admitted to police that he shot Clark but claimed it was in self-defense. Nevertheless, Gucci was later charged with murder and put in jail. Several months later, prosecutors dropped the charges due to a lack of evidence.

In a rare 2006 interview with VladTV, Gucci Mane, whose real name is Radric Davis, opens up about his rise in the rap game. He also reveals his songwriting techniques and what inspired him to rap.

"I started writing poetry in school," he shared. After graduating from high school, Gucci started his rap career and "being a boss with it."

Laflare also encouraged his fans to stay in school and get their education.

"Education got me to where I was at," he said. "Me I'm a rapper, so I deal with a lot of words. So I went to English class and I made A's in it because one day I knew I was going to be a poet, a rapper."

When asked about him beating his murder rap charge, Gucci said that he would rather focus on the future and not his past.

"I'm just looking forward...'cause I'm out of jail," he said. "So who wants to talk about beefs that I had. I don't have no beef. The only beef I have is filet mignon."
