As promised, Vince Staples has followed his well-received EP, Prima Donna, with a short film. The film is about 10 minutes long, and finds Vince struggling with the allure of fame, the toll it takes both spiritually and psychologically. It’s both eerie and brilliant.
The thought-provoking visual was directed by Nabil, and is often dark, as Vince grapples with his sanity and perceptions of reality. The film is a nice companion to the EP, expanding on the same basic themes presented in the audio version. Vince talked about the downside of fame and being an artist in an interview with Zane Lowe last week, specifically mentioning Frank Ocean.
“You’re not a person when you make music,” he said. You’re a link. They just want to click it. You’re not uploaded yet, f— you. What happened? Your mom died? Your car didn’t start today? You’re not in a good mood? Where’s my song? It gets kind of crazy out here.”
No doubt, the short-film is one that will need to be watched several times to understand some of the symbolism and deeper points Vince is trying to make. All in all, it’s a solid reminder as to why the 23 year-old California rapper is widely considered to be among the best in the game.
