Vic Mensa debuted a tribute song, “16 Shots;” dedicated to his fellow Chicagoan, Laquan McDonald, who was killed by the police.

The “Down on My Luck” rapper was one of many artists to head to Flint, Michigan to raise money for aid to the city, which has had poisonous water for months due to government negligence.

“I wanna say thanks for allowing me to stand with y’all. I feel very close to the situation,” said Mensa in his speech after performing “U Mad.” “As soon as my man, Ryan Coogler hit me up about it, I was like ‘say no more.’ I’ll jump on a flight and let’s rock because this s— is not right.”

Mensa also went on to say that this crisis is something happening “all around the nation” before he detailed the gruesome details regarding Laquan McDonald’s death.

“A kid shot sixteen times by the police. Shot on the ground while he’s dead,” he said. “The biggest thing is that they’re not respecting our lives. They don’t respect that our lives have value, but we know they do. That’s why we’re here right now.”

He then headed into the boisterous political track –which encourages listeners to put their hands up. “We came to fight,” it continues afterwards. It’s definitely a powerful track and we can’t wait to hear the CDQ version.

The rally, #JusticeForFlint, featured several major artists like Janelle Monae, Musiq Soulchild, Jazmine Sullivan and Stevie Wonder.
