Tyga ‘Careless World’ Debuts at No. 4, Despite Recall

Young Money rapper Tyga‘s long-awaited sophomore album, ‘Careless World: Rise of the Last King,‘ was released on Feb. 21, debuting at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, despite a recall of the physical release, due to an uncleared Martin Luther King sample.

While it is unclear how the sample of King’s legendary ‘I Have a Dream’ speech went uncleared, and the physical release was removed from shelves for several days, it still sold 61,000 units, 83 percent of which were sold digitally.

Tyga appeared on BET’s ’106 & Park’ with his artist Honey Cocaine on Wednesday (Feb. 29), to discuss ‘Careless World,’ revealing that he got news of the recall just two days before release date.

“I had over 200,000 CDs in stores — Best Buy, Walmart, Target,” the ‘Rack City’ rapper explained. “Then I got a call two days before the album was about to drop, and they were like ‘Yo, either we got to push your date back another two weeks or you ain’t gonna have no albums the first week.”

In an interview with MTV’s RapFix, Tyga continued to say that if he’d known the short sample would jeopardize his first-week sales, he never would have included it, and that clearing samples is “not really my job to do.”

“I thought it would be like more public use, since it was on YouTube. I eventually knew you had to get it cleared with someone, but that’s not really my job to do,” the Los Angeles natvie revealed. “That’s why you got lawyers and a label that’s supposed to do that, and I guess it just got overlooked. To hear that, to get that phone call, it’s like, you know, don’t bring me all the way to the finish line and drop the baton … I’ve been working so hard for this, and you guys couldn’t clear a little sample?”

Tyga is currently in the first leg of his Careless World Tour, which launched on Feb. 17, and runs through April 17. To buy tickets, or for more information, click here.
