Ty Dolla $ign Delivers Soulful Anthem ‘L.A.’ Featuring Brandy, Kendrick Lamar & James Fauntleroy
Back in March, Ty Dolla $ign’s hometown anthem “L.A.” was leaked online and was swiftly removed from the internet. Now with the rapper-singer’s debut album, Free TC, set to hit stores on Nov. 13, we get to hear the official version of the song this time featuring Brandy, Kendrick Lamar and James Fauntleroy.
Unlike the original version, the 30-year-old producer delivers a soulful rendition about his beloved city, Los Angeles. “Grew up around the gangsters and the cutthroats / Be careful where you at, you might get bust on / Yeah, all my South Central n----s, Inglewood, twist your fingers up / Compton and Watts, Eastside, always turning up / Bad bitches up at Greystone and Supper Club / Tell ’em where we’re from,” he sings.
K.Dot's fierce verse remains intact as he salutes his Compton hometown and rap idol Tupac Shakur.
“Hope I’m teachin’ you all the lessons I learned / When I made that turn off the 110 / Watch that marijuana just burn / This s— just make you wanna just sin / See that Staples Center high yearnin’ if the Lakers get me a win / I’m gonna liquor shot in memory of Pac, Makaveli live again / Bitch, I’m in L.A., yeah!” he spits.
Brandy contributes her angelic voice to mix, which gives the tune its ethereal feel and it puts you in a reflective mood. But it's crooner James Fauntleroy's Auto-Tune-driven vocals on top of orchestral violins that helps complete this otherwise stellar song.
"L.A." follows behind Ty Dolla's just-released single, "Solid," which features Babyface. You can watch their acoustic guitar-driven video here.
Ty Dolla $ign's Free TC is a star-studded collection featuring guest appearances from Jagged Edge, Wiz Khalifa, Fetty Wap, Kanye West, Diddy, Trey Songz, R. Kelly, Future, Rae Sremmurd and more.
