In celebration of HBO’s upcoming television biopic Bessie, the cable giant has launched the Bessie’s 81 Theatre Tour featuring singer Stacy Barthe and hitmaker Bryan-Michael Cox. The trek takes place in New York on April 28 and 30.

Bessie chronicles the meteoric rise of the late blues legend Bessie Smith (played by Queen Latifah), who became the highest-paid black entertainer of her day. Tragically, she died at the age of 43 in a car accident. The tour itself takes the name of 81 Theatre in Atlanta, which is where Smith developed her singing act in 1913.

The Bessie’s 81 Theatre Tour features workshops and showcases with singers and producers.

On April 28, Stacy Barthe and Bryan-Michael Cox will participate in a workshop on the craft of songwriting and producing. There will also be a music showcase with artists Deva Mahal, Gabriel Garzon-Montano, Adeline Michele and Phony Ppl.

The tour wraps up with a special surprise concert performance with high-profile artists on April 30. Could it be Queen Latifah onstage? You'll just have to wait and find out if you're a special invited guest.

Bessie will premiere on HBO on May 16 at 8 p.m. ET. The film also stars Mo’Nique as blues legend Ma Rainey (a huge influence on Smith’s career), Michael K. Williams as Smith’s first husband, Jack Gee, and Khandi Alexander as Smith’s sister Viola.
