The family of Michael Brown, the 18 year-old teen who was shot and killed in 2014 by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, sparking national outrage and protests, has reached an undisclosed settlement with the city of Ferguson, Missouri, in a wrongful death civil suit.

The amount of the settlement agreement has been sealed to the public. U.S. Federal Judge E. Richard Webber said that "Disclosure of the terms of the settlement agreement could jeopardize the safety of individuals involved in this matter, whether as witnesses, parties, or investigators."

He also called the settlement, "fair and reasonable compensation." Brown's parents filed a wrongful death suit against the city of Ferguson, Wilson, and the town's former police chief in 2015. The civil lawsuit brought by Brown's family stated Wilson "unjustifiably shot and killed Brown, using an unnecessary and unreasonable amount of force in violation of Brown's constitutionally guaranteed right to life."

A grand jury would later fail to indict Wilson. Additionally, in 2015 the Justice Department cleared Wilson of civil rights violations, but in a report found a pattern of biased policing in Ferguson. The shooting of Brown is considered one of the main catalysts, alongside the murder of Trayvon Martin, that sparked the Black Lives Matter Movement and the push for an end to police terrorism in black communities.

The amount of the settlement will be distributed to the two plaintiffs and their attorneys. All claims against the city and those named in the suit were dismissed.
