Reverend Run Talks Run-D.M.C. Comeback

Run-D.M.C. made a brief comeback last August for Jay-Z’s Made in America festival, and they’ll be doing so once again tomorrow (March 16) at the Borgata Event Center in Atlantic City, N.J.

But wait, we thought they were retired? Although they’re not flat-out confirming it, all signs seem to indicate that the group may be in the beginning stages of a comeback.

“Management went crazy after Made in America, ready to book a billion shows,” Reverend Run tells Philly.com. “They call. [DMC], he says, ‘Nope, nope, nope.’ I say, ‘OK.’ Then, when he finally does say yes to a gig like the Borgata, I say yes with him. I’m cool when he says yes.”

According to Run, a potential comeback falls largely on D.M.C.’s shoulder.

“We’re not doing a tour,” he explained. “I’m there when he’s there. As for new material, I’ll take a line from Justin Bieber’s book: Never say never.”

But it sounds like he’s eager to prove he can get back out there.

“People didn’t think we would be able to go back on stage,” he says. “Even my brother Russell [Simmons] had his doubts. They tried to scare me. But you know what? Doing the old songs is fun. They’re all hits. You put them on and it’s just like doing karaoke. Really good karaoke.”

The group has done a few small spot dates in recent months, like at the Fun Fun Fun festival in Austin, T.X., last fall. They’ll play in Atlanta, G.A. on June 1.
