A struggling rapper and actor has been arrested and charged with the murder of E’Dena Hines, the granddaughter of actor Morgan Freeman. According to police, Lamar Davenport, her boyfriend, fatally stabbed Hines in front of her apartment in New York's Washington Heights neighborhood on Aug. 16.

Davenport is being charged with second-degree murder in Hines' death. According to PEOPLE, Freeman’s granddaughter may have been stabbed in what is being described as an "exorcism." Hines had suffered multiple stab wounds to her torso, the NYPD confirmed. Her killer was actually in a drug-induced psychosis when he came after her.

A witness told CBS News that he heard Hines and Davenport arguing from his apartment window about an hour before her body was found. The witness said it seemed as if Davenport was performing an exorcism and yelling things like “Devil, be gone.”

Shortly after news of Hines' death hit the internet, Freeman released a statement via his Facebook page.

I want to acknowledge the tremendous outpouring of love and support my family has received regarding the tragic and senseless passing of my granddaughter Edena Hines. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. -M

Hines had been a graduate student in the three-year graduate acting program at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts from 2008 to 2011. "She was so full of life," Hines' friend Tami Dunn told PEOPLE. "It's hard to believe that she's gone."

A police source told New York Post that Davenport, who was an artist who went by the nickname “Lyric," had six prior arrests that included marijuana and petit larceny.

Friends maintain that Hines and Davenport were a couple and didn't show any signs that their relationship was problematic. "There was nothing in her relationship with Lamar that indicated this type of trouble," said Dunn. "He seemed to love her, and she talked about him positively, whenever she talked about him. That's why it's such a shock."

This is a horrible tragedy and we send our deepest condolences to Morgan Freeman's family.
