Rap World Descends Upon VH1′s ‘Hip Hop Honors’

Southern hip-hop was represented to the fullest at last night’s taping of VH1′s annual ‘Hip Hop Honors’ in New York City.

Host by ‘The Office’ actor/comedian Craig Robinson, the event honored the hip-hop hotbeds of the “Dirty South,” from Houston to Atlanta, Miami to New Orleans. Special attention was paid to southern rap pioneers J. Prince, Jermaine Dupri, Master P, Timbaland, Uncle Luke and Organized Noize, each of whom hosted their own tribute sets. Paul Wall and Lil Jon joined Robinson in several comedic sketches throughout the night. In addition to providing laughs, Wall joined fellow Texans Bun B, Chamillionaire, Slim Thug and Willie D in tribute to J. Prince’s Rap-a-Lot records and Houston, backed by Drake, Juvenile and the Game — the latter a late addition, after Plies dropped out.

“I always say the East Coast is one piece of bread, and the West Coast is another piece of bread, and the South is the meat. I describe it that way, ’cause everyone has roots in the South,”J. Prince said of the South’s contribution to the game.

Mystikal – Make ‘Em Say Ugh

Atlanta’s rap community showed their love for “the A,” with appearances by Gucci Mane, T.I., the Ying Yang Twins and DJ Drama, and Jermaine Dupri brought out Dem Franchize Boyz, Diddy and Bow Wow, who received a standing ovation for his tribute to JD’s breakout group Kriss Kross, replete with backwards clothing.

Though Uncle Luke suffered technical difficulties during his 2 Live Crew tribute, Miami was represented by Pitbull, Trick Daddy, Flo Rida and Trina, and a memorable performance by Rick Ross and DJ Khaled. Master P brought out Silkk the Shocker, Mystikal and his son Romeo, and in homage to their native New Orleans the former No Limit rappers performed their hit ‘Make ‘Em Say Ugh,’ with an energetic Mystikal stealing the show.

The night was rounded out by Organized and Timbaland, who brought out a variety of guests, including Nelly, Fabolous, Keri Hilson and newcomer Asher Roth.

Look out for VH1′s Hip Hop Honors: The Dity South, airing Monday, at 9 PM EST on VH1.
