Rakim is set to perform on the greatest stage in New York City. The legendary rap god (sorry, Eminem) will headline the “Let’s Take It Higher” benefit concert at Carnegie Hall on Nov. 3.

The event, presented by Hip Hop Saves Lives, is honoring the global impact of hip-hop culture over the last 40 years. Hip-hop patriarchs DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa and Rock Steady Crew will be saluted for their indelible contributions to the culture. Also on the performers’ list is Nice and Smooth, Brown Rice Family, Astro and Zing Experience.

Rakim follows in the footsteps of other big-name artists who have graced Carnegie’s illustrious stage, including Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, the Roots, Lauryn Hill, Lenny Kravitz and Wyclef Jean.

According to AllHipHop, the Hip-Hop Saves Lives program, which was founded by Chad Harper, is designed to help at-risk youth through music and education.

“We don’t just teach humanity through Hip Hop, we create humanitarians,” says Harper.

This is a fantastic look for Rakim and hip-hop. This shows that if you mix altruism and music together great things can happen.
