Questlove, Game + More Tweet About Osama bin Laden’s Death
"Tonight I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that has killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda," President Barack Obama told the American public Sunday (May 1) night.
It was perhaps the most welcomed and unexpected news America could have expected on a sleepy Sunday evening. The reports that the world's most notorious terrorist Osama bin Laden had been killed -- almost 10 years after the FBI put a hit on him -- set social media aflutter. As a result of witnessing friends' Facebook statuses and Twitter posts, many people turned on their TVs (and waited) for Obama to address the nation.
They say that everyone always remembers where they were or what they were doing upon hearing life-altering national headlines -- like the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the fall of the Twin Towers in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001 -- but in 2011, social media has made it possible for people to share their exact whereabouts and what they were doing when they heard the big news. Below are some collected tweets of the hodgepodge of thoughts in the hip-hop community following the news that Osama bin Laden had met his rightful doom. (Yeah, they don't beat this guy's tweets though.)
Wu-Tang's Raekwon was "Leavin to hit my show at ace of spades in sac town!" when he heard the news bin Laden was killed. "Wow, on the bus watching cnn it went down!"
Chamillionaire poked fun at FOX News' spelling Osama with a "U," one of several ways to spell bin Laden's first name and avoid a blunder like this one. "Cmon Fox News!!!! If you're gonna give out the secret info before Obama does you could at least spell Osama Bin Laden's name right." And then thought back to when the hunt for bin Laden first began. "I said something about looking for Bin Laden on the GYMC album (A lifetime ago) when me & Paul Wall were in a group. How long ago was that?"
Questlove of the Roots stuck up for Obama who had a winning weekend after delivering a great speech at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday (April 30), and revealing news of bin Laden's capture. "Imma be real mad if America jump on the approval rating jock again based on a piece of paper, some well told jokes, & this recent news."
The thought resonated with Joell Ortiz, who tweeted, "im dying to see how the tea baggers gonna spin this."
But other tweets reflected on the oxymoron of people rejoicing over the death of someone, whether it be a criminal mastermind or civilian.
Always ready with an interesting tweet, Lil 'I'm Gay' B tweeted, "[sic] jsut because they say osama is dead dosent mean thats a good thing osama has family to that probably loves him alot as well."
While Questlove also made a point to say, "I hope those rejoicing can hear O's words that to engage in anti Islam/Muslim rhetoric is missing the point."
Lupe Fiasco had some choice words for the future, tweeting, "Now kill poverty, wack schools, and US imperialism..."
