Q-Tip is set to play Miles Davis in a new play written by Nelson George, My Funny Valentine.

The announcement has been at least eight years in the making, as Tip first made the announcement back in 2010. Now, the play is set to open this month. The play is based on the Don Cheadle film, Miles Ahead and aims to shed light on “a day in the life of a jazz giant."

In an interview with XXL back in 2010, Q-Tip said he wasn't scared to take on the role of the legendary jazz musician because “I relate to him.”

The play will focus specifically on Davis' life in the early 80s, which was full of turmoil.

According to Colorlines, the play will debut during a staged reading in New York City at Joe’s Pub on March 26, and the production of My Funny Valentine is part of “There Was Sound,” a performance series that "incorporates new sound design and video components into otherwise unproduced script readings." The series is curated by Nelson for Joe's Pub with actresses and producers Cassandra Freeman (Atlanta) and Margot Bingham (She’s Gotta Have It).
