President Obama Sings Al Green’s ‘Let’s Stay Together’

President Obama showed off his vocal prowess Thursday night (Jan. 19) at a fundraising event held at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, N.Y., surprising those in attendance who weren’t aware the Commander in Chief could carry a tune.

As he stood at a podium in front of an American flag, Obama shared his enthusiasm over watching soul crooner Rev. Al Green perform at the event. Then, in an unexpected move, the president of the U.S. broke out in song, attempting to get through Green’s 1971 smash ‘Let’s Stay Together.’

“I…I’m so in love with you,” he sang to booming applause and cheers.

After the audience quieted down, Obama went on to explain that his team had little faith he could command the mic as a singer. “Those guys didn’t think I would do it,” he stated. “I told you I was gonna do it.”

Obama, a fan of both hip-hop and R&B, spoke directly to Al Green as he sat amongst the crowd. “Don’t worry Rev., I cannot sing like you, but I just wanted to show my appreciation,” Obama admitted.

Besides Al Green, singer India.Arie also graced the stage. Politico reports that President Obama raised close to $3.1 million from fundraisers held throughout New York City.

Last week, Obama welcomed songstress Janelle Monae to Chicago to perform at another fundraiser. He expressed his fondness for the 26-year-old Kansas City, Kansas native. “Janelle and her team are incredibly talented,” he said. “I want to thank Janelle Monae for her wonderful performance.”
