Pharrell Teaches Master Class and Offers Students Musical Advice

In October 2015, Grammy award winner Pharrell Williams was named artist-in-residence for the Tisch School of Arts at New York University. Since then, he hasn’t only been able to detail his own experiences in music but he’s also gained knowledge and inspiration from the students.

The Voice judge recently taught an invaluable master class at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music hosted by Tisch professors, Bob Power and Jason King.

During the class, Pharrell took the time to listen to the students’ music projects, gave advice on their sound, and discussed his creative thought process, as well as sharing his thoughts on mastering the music business. Power and King also interviewed him during the class about his passion for music.

“The idea behind the masterclass was to have Pharrell work directly with our students, and to give them ideas about how to shape the music they’re making,” King explained. “It’s our mission to train students as creative entrepreneurs, and few artists have married the art and business of recorded music as successfully as Pharrell.”

This Master Class wasn’t the only thing Pharrell had in mind, though. He and his wife, Helen Lasichanh, announced they will be funding a scholarship for a high school student to attend Clive Davis Institute’s High School Program this upcoming summer.

“I am, both personally and through From One Hand to AnOTHER, committed to bringing kids experiences that ignite their passions, challenge their minds, and provide them with opportunities to learn and be creative,” Pharrell said in an interview with NYU.
