Pete Rock Posts Instagram Pic of Him and CL Smooth in the Studio Together
Pete Rock and CL Smooth are one of the most beloved and underrated hip-hop acts of the 1990s. Of course, Pete Rock is also one of the greatest hip-hop producers of all time, with a lengthy resume spanning more 25 years; but, ever since they split in 1995, fans have always clamored for a full-fledged reunion between Rock and his erstwhile partner from back in the day.
So there is good news.
Pete Rock posted a photo of he and C.L. in a recording studio together last night (February 25) on Instagram — along with the hashtag “#WeBack” and “#itsaboutdattime.”
“Lmao! Had a great meeting of the minds with da big homie!” Rock captioned with the pic of he and CL smiling like old friends goofing around. Hours later, the superproducer was featured in a photo of he and CL along with O.C., and Show ( or as he was formerly known, Showbiz) at D.I.T.C. Studios in the Bronx, New York.
After working behind-the-scenes, Pete Rock and CL Smooth emerged in 1991 with their EP All Souled Out before releasing their debut studio album Mecca and The Soul Brother the following year. That album boasted landmark singles like “Straighten It Out” and the ubiquitous “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.),” an ode to their friend Troy “Trouble T-Roy” Dixon, a dancer in Heavy D & the Boyz who’d died in 1990 after an accidental fall.
The duo hasn’t released music together since the early 2000s (CL appeared on solo Pete Rock projects, and Rock produced a couple of tracks for CL’s albums) and they’ve only recorded sporadically since their official split in 1994 following the release of their critically-acclaimed second album, The Main Ingredient. They have toured together in the 2010s, and it looks like these occasional dalliances have only driven up the call for new music. Rock has indicated before that a new Pete Rock and CL album could be forthcoming. Maybe it’s finally about to be a reality?
