For the past week PBS has been airing their eight-part documentary series called Soundbreaking, which explores the art of music recording and delivers a behind-the-scenes look at some of the innovative sounds that have come out of our nation’s music culture.

One such innovation is hip-hop music and the recorded word. The episode, titled “The World Is Yours,” chronicles the development of rap music from the streets of the Bronx, N.Y., to mainstream popularity. On the 52-minute series, hip-hop luminaries such as Chuck D, Questlove, Afrika Bambaataa, as well as music historians explain the music’s origins and how it changed popular music post-Disco era.

From there, it explores how “Rappers Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang bolstered rap into the mainstream and as Questlove says, “It was a War of the Worlds” moment.

The series also delves into James Brown’s significant contribution to hip-hop as it relates to DJing and production as Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Q-Tip and others detail how his music made rap into a bold new artform.

There’s a lot of information and music in this particular Soundbreaking episode. So grab a sandwich and a drink and enjoy the show. Watch it in full above.
