Miguel Subject of Homophobic Spoof by NYC Radio Jocks

Listeners tuned into New York City’s Power 105.1′s The Breakfast Club morning show on Wednesday (June 6) may have been surprised when, rather than hear Miguel sing his hit song ‘Sure Thing,’ they were met with a spoof that took aim at the crooner’s sexuality.

According to NewsOne, the track, which sits at No. 2 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, was played with a set of new lyrics. “You can bet that, you don’t have to sweat that” was replaced with, “You can bet that, Miguel wants your butt crack,” which was then followed by a voice asserting “n—- you’re gay.”

The show, made up of jocks Angela Yee, DJ Envy and Charlamagne Tha God, poked fun at the ‘All I Want Is You’ creator’s sexual preference, for which he has addressed in the past, saying he “loves women,” but media still seems to take issue with his claims.

LGBT civil rights organization The Human Rights Campaign released a statement to NewsOne condemning the radio station’s remarks.

“There’s nothing humorous about homophobia,” said Deputy Press Secretary Paul Guequierre. “When young people who might be struggling with their identity listen to the radio, they shouldn’t hear a dangerous message of hate. Radio stations have a responsibility instead to send a message that embraces everyone for who they are.”

In other Miguel news, the singer posted a controversial tweet on Tuesday night (July 5), which some of his followers thought took aim at singer Lloyd, who released his ‘King of Hearts’ album on the same day and debuted a new hairstyle similar to that of Miguel’s. “Imitation is the Highest form of Flattery. Shout to LLoyd,” Miguel tweeted. In a follow-up post, he addressed the feedback received since writing the less than 140-character message. “Beef with Lloyd? Shots? None at all. Its 2011, Get Money.”
