The Democratic National Convention kicked off yesterday, and it got off to a pretty a rocky start— with, you know, leaked emails that showed the DNC chairman clearly favored Hillary Clinton and potentially sabotaged Bernie Sanders’ campaign, and the revelation that said emails were probably leaked by Russian spies. Sound like a movie?
At any rate, Bernie supporters showed out in spades, interrupted speeches, booed folks and openly wept when Sanders capped the evening off with a speech that basically said, “Dude, I lost. Get behind Hillary or have your life ruined by Donald Trump.”
But even with all of that and Cory Booker’s channelling of 2004 Obama (we’ll definitely see dude in 2024), the highlight of the evening was, without a doubt, when Michelle Obama took the stage, and effortlessly embodied grace, intelligence and beauty—all of the attributes we’ve come to know and love about the first lady.
Her speech was electric, heartfelt, passionate and frankly, one for the ages. It was eloquent and extended beyond a pressing for the democrats to come together and support Hillary Clinton’s presidential run. It exposed America’s dirty truths but remained optimistic about its future, hopeful even. And mostly, it reminded us why, policy aside, these past eight years incredibly special.
That is the story of this country, the story that has brought me to this stage tonight, the story of generations of people who felt the lash of bondage, the shame of servitude, the sting of segregation, but who kept on striving and hoping and doing what needed to be done so that today I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves.
And I watch my daughters, two beautiful, intelligent, black young women playing with their dogs on the White House lawn.

Incredible speech by an incredible woman. Couldn't be more proud & our country has been blessed to have her as FLOTUS. I love you, Michelle.
