Fans were shocked by the news that Mary J. Blige had filed for divorce from her husband and longtime manager, Kendu Isaacs. Blige cited irreconcilable differences. The couple was married on December 7, 2003 in a private ceremony and do not have any children together, though Isaacs is the father of three children from a previous relationship.

Essence reports that the singer released a statement through her rep about the split.

“Ms. Blige is saddened to say [that] it is true that she has filed for divorce, saying sometimes things don't work how we hoped they would... but, there is a divine plan and a reason for everything," the statement reads. "Mary will continue writing and working on her album, which is due out later this year along with her world tour. She thanks and appreciates her fans for their support and love through this very difficult emotional time.”

According to TMZ, Blige has also reportedly asked a judge to block Isaacs from requesting or obtaining spousal support after the divorce. In a May 2006 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Blige expressed her devotion to Isaacs but did acknowledged that marriage is a struggle.

“It’s difficult for me to be with someone who tells me the truth, because I come from a family of women who are fighters – they don’t listen to men,” she said. “I have issues with hearing him. But I’m growing.”

Isaacs has not commented on the matter as of yet. Here's hoping things stay amicable.
