Marvel Comics Pays Tribute to Classic Albums With Hip-Hop Variant Covers [PHOTOS]

From the GZA’s 1995 classic album Liquid Swords to MF Doom’s 1999 LP Operation: Doomsday to Eminem teaming up with Punisher, hip-hop and comics have a long, collaborative history together. Marvel recognizes this and they’ve created a brilliant project that pays homage to hip-hop.

In October, Marvel will be releasing the “Hip-Hop Variant” project, which meshes classic rap album covers with their popular comic book characters. Classic albums from 50 Cent, Eric B. and Rakim, Wu-Tang Clan, Lauryn Hill, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, the Notorious B.IG., De La Soul and more will get the comic book treatment.

The Ant-Man Mark Brooks-designed cover is based on the Notorious B.I.G.’s classic Ready to Die while Squadron Supreme #1 calls on the Wu-Tang Clan and their Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers release thanks to Mike Del Mundo. Phil Noto uses Tyler, The Creator’s Wolf album for The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1 and A Tribe Called Quest’s Midnight Marauders finds its way onto Amazing Spider-Man #1 also courtesy of Mike Del Mundo.

Check out the 13 hip-hop-inspired covers above.
