The baseball community is mourning the loss of one of their star players. José Fernández, the beloved Miami Marlins pitcher, died in a boating accident on Sunday morning (Sept. 25). He was 24 years old.

"The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time," the Marlins released in a statement. In addition, Sunday's game against the Atlanta Braves at Marlins Park in Miami has been cancelled.

According to USA Today, Fernández was on a 32-foot boat that was driving at a high speed when it struck rocks causing the boat to overturn on a jetty off Miami Beach. Fernandez reportedly was not driving the boat and died as a result of the crash, not drowning. Two other passengers were injured in the accident. No drugs or alcohol were found at the scene.

Fernández was the star pitcher on the Marlins team with a 38-17 record, with 589 strikeouts and a 2.58 ERA. In May of 2014, Fernández underwent Tommy John surgery, and returned to the big leagues on July 2, 2015. That same year he became a U.S. citizen.

Outside of his phenomenal pitching skills, the Cuban-American athlete was beloved for his charming personality and camaraderie with other players in the bullpen.

Last Tuesday (Sept. 20), Fernández went on his Instagram page to salute his pregnant girlfriend, writing, "I’m so glad you came into my life. I’m ready for where this journey is gonna take us together. #familyfirst.”

Upon hearing the tragic news of Fernández's tragic death, rapper Lil Wayne expressed his condolences on Twitter. "Still in disbelief abt the Jose Fernandez news. RIP bro & my prayers go 2 the fam," he tweeted.

Other baseball players and athletes went on social media to remember the fallen star pitcher.

We want to send our heartfelt condolences to the family of José Fernández. He will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace.
