Machine Gun Kelly, mtvU Woodies 2013: Cleveland MC Wins ‘Woodie of the Year’
Machine Gun Kelly took home the Woodie of the Year award at the 2013 mtvU Woodie Awards, which took place this weekend at SXSW in Austin, T.X. The Cleveland MC actually co-hosted the show, and beat out A$AP Rocky and Kendrick Lamar for the coveted award.
“Let me just say, this is a big deal to me, man,” he said during his acceptance speech. “When I began making music as a kid, I never grasped that it could bring you materials or money or women, because as a kid, I never wanted anything more than an escape, and that still holds true to this day.”
The rapper, who’s had a contentious relationship with the media and hip-hop establishment, said his support comes from the most important place — the fans.
“I may not have sold the most records, and I may not be loved by journalists, critics or the mainstream in general, but what I do have is the people,” he said. “And that to me is worth more than any platinum plaque, any magazine cover, any top 10 MC list. And if you want proof, you can direct your attention to my hand, because we got the Woodie of the motherfucking Year!”
Not letting the industry off that easy, he did offer one final shot.
“As for respect in this industry, you guys don’t have to give it,” he said. “Because we’re about to take it this year. The revolution’s begun. Black Flag!”
