While singers are usually thanked for their monetary donations or charity work, Lil Wayne was recently thanked by one American solder just for his song “Tie My Hands.”

Lander Chappell, a private first class soldier in the U.S. Army, revealed that the song helped him stay alive during a scary situation in Afghanistan, when he stepped on a roadside bomb and lost his leg.

In an interview, Chappell explained that during the ordeal, he was losing blood and drifting in and out of consciousness when another soldier tried to keep him awake. “He was like, ‘I got something for you,’ ” Lander recalled via Lil Wayne HQ. “Sing your song. Sing your favorite song. Sing it, sing it, sing it.”

So Chappell started singing Wayne’s “Tie My Hands.” “I play it all the time,” he explained. “And I sing it all the time. And the beat’s always in my head.”

Chappell credits the song to saving his life. “It got my mind off it and finally the medevac [medical evacuation] came,” he said. “We were still singing. We get on to the medevac. It’s one of the things I really appreciate him doing for me.”

In a tweet, Chappell added, “Would like to thank Lil Wayne for making Tie My Hands. It kept me alive when I stepped on an IED in Afghanistan. That song is inspiration.”

Well, the rapper heard the story and responded right away on his on Twitter page. Lil Wayne wrote, “PFC Lander Chappell, I’ve always known that my musik could change lives but I never knew it could save em as well. Thank u.”

Chappell is currently in therapy for his injuries.
