Lauryn Hill Delivers ‘Consumerism’ Lyric Video

The two songs Lauryn Hill released this year — ‘Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix)’ and ‘Consumerism’ — have been met with a lukewarm response. The ill feelings are directed toward the overly esoteric nature of the lyrics, which has sometimes been described as gibberish. Her rapid delivery didn’t help much either. It doesn’t look like Hill is abandoning the songs, however, as she’s just released the lyric video for ‘Consumerism.’

The text moves almost as fast as Hill’s performance. For those who didn’t catch what she’s saying when the song debuted, the visual shows she’s name-dropping complicated topics, including egotism, nepotism, capitalism, sadomasochism and various other kinds of isms.

The text is accompanied by a variety of striking images, including trippy animation, Nosferatu and African children.

Hill is closing out the year with a short tour that began with a performance at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom on Nov. 27. After finishing the trek at Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, N.Y., on Dec. 28, she’ll begin house arrest for her tax evasion case on New Year’s Day.
