Following an hours-long standoff with police, 23 year-old Korryn Gaines was shot dead by officers on Monday (August 2), according to news reports.

USA Today reports Gaines reportedly posted a video during the standoff of a 5 year-old boy talking in the background (video below). The boy was shot during the altercation, in which Gaines reportedly waved a gun at police who were attempting to serve her and a man a warrant for traffic violations. The police said they could not immediately determine whether the boy was shot by Gaines or the officers.

According to Baltimore County Police Chief James Johnson, three officers went to Gaines’ apartment at about 9:20 a.m. to serve arrest warrants on her and a man, reports USA Today. After knocking on Gaines' apartment door and receiving no answer, police obtained a key from the landlord and proceeded to enter, according to the Associated Press. An officer reportedly saw Gaines sitting on the floor, pointing a gun at him. A man fled from the apartment with a 1 year-old boy and was later arrested.

After hours of reportedly attempting to negotiate with Gaines, around 3 p.m. she pointed her gun at the officer and said, “If you don’t leave, I’m going to kill you.” An officer then shot at the woman, police said, according to the AP, and Gaines fired two shots. The officers were placed on routine administrative leave. Authorities told The Baltimore Sun that they did not yet know whether any of the officers involved in the shooting were wearing body cameras.

Gaines' uncle, Jerome Barnett, 44, told the Sun that Gaines "was feisty, but she was smart and she was respectful."

"My niece is a good person; I never knew her to be a rowdy person," he said.
