The 2015 BET Awards started off with a bang with Kendrick Lamar's performance of his To Pimp a Butterfly cut, "Alright," which immediately brought the packed crowd to its feet.

Performing on top of a cop car and clad in a forest green flight jacket, black T-shirt and jeans, the rapper came out hitting on all cylinders and was flanked with a bevy of dancers, who rocked out alongside the TDE frontman.

The American flag waved in the background, which served as a subtle middle finger to the justice system, a sentiment that was very much prevalent on his blockbuster sophomore LP. He rapped with an intense fervor and gave an energetic performance. King Kunta sets the bar high for all performers that will be gracing the stage tonight.

Kendrick Lamar has had the best year of any artist in rap going into the second half of the year. His much anticipated album, To Pimp a Butterfly, captivated critics and fans alike and is a front-runner for album of the year, solidifying his status as one of the genre's biggest acts.
