Kelly Price Issues Official Statement Following ‘As We Lay’ Gospel Controversy

After getting roasted on social media for performing “As We Lay” at a Gospel showcase, Kelly Price has issued an official statement regarding the incident--which occurred during the Indiana Black Expo Gospel Showcase over the weekend.

Apparently, Price was asked to perform prior to the Gospel Explosion event was to start but her time got pushed back. By the time the Grammy-nominated singer got onstage to perform, many people in the audience thought she was there for the Gospel event.

That wasn’t the case. When she performed her Shirley Murdock cover of "As We Lay" that's when all hell broke loose.

Price received a scolding from one of the MCs for performing the "infidelity anthem," which prompted her to go on Instagram and denounce church bigotry. But unfortunately, the 43-year-old singer also had to endured the harsh criticisms from fans on social media.

Reps for the Indiana Black Expo issued a statement thanking Price for her participation and explaining the confusion that occurred at the event. Likewise, fellow R&B singer-songwriter Rico Love went on his Instagram account to apologize because he invited Price to perform and didn't expect any confusion.

But Love also denounced some of the "judgmental spirit" that took place at the event as well as the hate that was spewed at Price on social media.

"I pray that we can become better when it comes to dealing with each other - ESPECIALLY when we have NO CLUSE WHAT WE ARE SPEAKING ABOUT," he writes. "I'm grateful to Indiana Black Expo for being such class acts about the situation. They stand behind Kelly and so do I."
