Last night at the 2015 BET Hip Hop Awards, Joyner Lucas got it right when he spit the line "See everybody watching like who the hell is this kid?" Before he stepped into the cypher with the likes of Charles Hamilton and Tink, he was a relatively unknown rapper out of Massachusetts.

That all changed when he stepped up to deliver lyrics over “Seven Minutes of Funk” by the funk band The Whole Darn Family, a beat selected by DJ Premier. In a behind-the-scenes interview with BET following his cypher performance, Lucas solidified his spot with a statement that proved he'd be fierce competition against his peers. "Y'all done messed up having me up in here," he said

Lucas, who's been rhyming since the age of 7, admitted that it's a dream come true to participate in the cypher alongside MCs with a respected career. He made sure to fire off lyrical gems for the rare opportunity. "You tryna stand out," he explained while sitting in a director's chair.

But it takes a lot to get to the cypher circle. Lucas shared some of his many inspirations to get to this place along with a select group of exceptional people in his life that motivate him to succeed.

Before he made it to the Hip Hop Awards, he was making waves with his song "Half N-----," a deeply personal ode that relays Lucas' experience growing up biracial.
