Josh Baze Says He Has a Story to Tell on ‘We Made It’ — Listen

Cartel Records

Despite being new to the game, up-and-coming Brooklyn MC Josh Baze has secured some big name support for his first official single, ‘We Made It.’

The 21-year-old rapper, who’s aptly-titled debut ‘The EP,’ is scheduled for a September release, has landed revered video director Hype Williams to helm the visual for his first single, and while the clip is not yet out, you can check out the song, ‘We Made It,’ after the jump.

“‘We Made It’ was the last track I recorded while putting my project together,” Baze told the BoomBox. “I spent two months and worked day and night on the album. I really wanted to make it inspiring, but [also] give it that celebration feel, because this was my victory And graduation all in one.”

Baze’s celebratory first single does in fact sound like a graduation of sorts; the beat could have fit on Kanye West‘s 2007 album of the same name — and with good reason, it was produced by Baze’s manager, Griffin Guess, who worked closely with Kanye on the promotion of ‘Graduation.’

“He understood the direction I wanted to go in and he conquered it,” Baze said of his manager’s production. “This song doesn’t fit in anywhere in today’s dance movement. I’m proud of myself because I learned how to divide my sound from what’s considered ‘same as the rest.’ I learned from the greats — Slick Rick, Biggie, Jay-Z, Kanye West, 2Pac… I want my music to create a lane that no one can water down. Not everyone has money, cars, clothes or different women they sleep with every night. I have a story to tell, and I want people to feel like they need me to love a part of them no one else will.”

In addition to his Hype Williams-directed visual, Josh Baze is reportedly working with Jamie Foxx and deadmau5.
