Jim Jones Makes ‘Magic’ Happen With Girl Talk

Jim Jones found himself an interesting lab partner recently: indie mash-up DJ Gregg Gillis, better known as Girl Talk.

The unlikely collaboration was a turn on Pitchfork.tv’s ‘Selector‘ series. The installment has been teaming a hip-hop and indie artist each week since March. Rappers are asked to pick between two beats created by different indie artists and then provide a freestyle over it.

As a DJ, Gillis has always crossed a fine line when it comes to sampling — the bulk of his tracks are cut up, yet recognizable chunks of mainstream and classic tracks. For this particular session, the Dipset rapper invited Gillis into his New York City NoMad District studio to put the beats to the bars. The end result is ‘Believe in Magic,’ a soul-drenched, David Banner-like single that samples ’70s soul group Honey Cone’s ‘Want Ads.’ Jones felt the magic so much in fact that he had R&B crooner Lloyd join in for a verse and promises to release the song as a single in the future.

While Jones calls his music “aggressive,” he’s been taking an experimental approach to recording lately. He released his fifth solo LP ‘Capo’ in April. The album’s first single ‘Perfect Day‘ took a turn for pop where Jones showed off his singing and vocal skills. ‘Everybody Jones,’ the album’s second single, was more of a bass-heavy anthem. Jones also admitted he’d also be open to hitting the studio with Kid Rock.
