Jazmine Sullivan Juggles Music and Movies With ‘Red Tails’ Role

For many performers, transitioning into acting is the logical next step in their careers, but for singer Jazmine Sullivan, who is set for her film debut in the movie, ‘Red Tails,’ alongside singer/songwriter Ne-Yo, she hasn’t quite been bit by the acting bug. Although stepping into character wasn’t too hard — she plays a singer in the film — Sullivan says that she’d rather stick to being a musician than a thespian.

“It was nice, it was a good experience,” she told The BoomBox. “I love what I do. I love making music, I love singing, I love performing. I don’t like to just do a bunch of things just because I can. I’d like to be good at acting but music is my passion.”

The film, which documents the struggle of Tuskegee Airmen during World War II, as they fight for their country while simultaneously fight to be seen as equal citizens at a time when America was plagued by segregation. Directed by newcomer Anthony Hemingway, and produced by ‘Star Wars‘ director George Lucas, Sullivan traveled to Prague and Croatia for the film, which she admits turned out to be a pretty good deal for her first time on the silver screen. “I didn’t actually get to see him,” she says of working with Lucas. “The guys got to like go to his house and talk to him and all that, but just the fact that my first film was a George Lucas film, it was crazy!”

Sullivan is, of course, very much focused on her blossoming singing career. The Philadelphia native just wrapped up a stint on Mary J. Blige‘s Music Saved My Life tour, and shot the video for her latest single ’10 Seconds’ directed by Benny Boom in New York in mid-October. Featuring production from Missy Elliott, No I.D., and Salaam Remi, on her sophomore release ‘Love Me Back,’ which hits stores November 30, the singer chose to show multiple facets of relationships, and hopes to one day be make her way up to legendary status. “I want to have an impact on fans and musicians. I want people to look up to me and aspire to have done what I did.”
