Jay-Z Following in Frank Sinatra’s Shoes
Jay-Z, who's been an actual chairman of the board, is now following in the footsteps of music's chairman. The hip-hop icon has been tapped to reopen the venerable Hollywood Palladium. And when Jay-Z takes the stage there October 15 he will be backed by a 12-piece band, just as Sinatra was when he first opened the doors of the venue back in 1940. "I'm honored to play such an iconic venue," Jay-Z said in a statement. "Just as Frank ushered in a golden era, I hope this opening will mark the beginning of a resurgence in generation defining live music."
The selection of Jay-Z to usher in the Live Nation-run, remodeled venue, which over the years has hosted the likes of everybody from Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones to James Brown and Public Enemy, is also one of the first of many examples of the symmetry between Live Nation and artists signed to the all-inclusive 360 deals, as Jay-Z was among the first to jump on the trend, signing with the increasing prolific promoter in April of this year after leaving Def Jam.
