Janelle Monae Performs ‘Electric Lady,’ Explains Lyrics on ‘Arsenio’

It wouldn’t be all that surprising if ‘Electric Lady’ was the next single to drop from Janelle Monae‘s sophomore album. The singer has performed the jam in her appearance on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ last weekend for ‘Black Girls Rock’ and last night (Nov. 5) on ‘Arsenio.’

Monae’s performance has some of the same features as her prior ones: varsity jackets, a backing band with matching black-and-white attire, dancing backup singers and fluent footwork from the singer herself. Solange, who’s featured on the album version of the track, once again doesn’t make an appearance.

The dazzling singer also sat down with Arsenio Hall and explained ‘Dorothy Dandridge Eyes,’ the jazzy, Esperanza Spalding-featuring tribute to the woman who became the first African American to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress.

“Not only was Dorothy beautiful, but she was an activist. She really did open up doors for women of color,” Monae said about the actress.

‘Electric Lady’ has a lot of these message-centered songs like ‘Ghetto Woman,’ her ode to single, working-class African American women. But for now, the title track is taking the spotlight.
