An up-and-coming Florida rapper was shot and killed this past weekend while he was coaching a youth football game. Rapper J Green, whose real name is Jonathan Lee Jordan, died after being shot on Saturday (Sept. 24) only two days before his 32nd birthday.

According to The Ledger, the shooting happened during the last day of a youth football tournament between two local teams in Haines City, Fla. The now-deceased 31-year-old rapper was coaching the Rattlers' flag football team, a squad for boys ages 4 to 6 that included the rapper's son. The Rattlers were playing against the Dundee Ducks; both teams entered into the game with 7-0 perfect records.

Apparently, after the Rattlers' game, that's when the shooting occurred. According to eyewitnesses, the crowd was watching another football match when they heard gunfire nearby.

"I really don’t know exactly what happened," Randy Penick, president of the Haines City-based Northeast Rattlers, told The Ledger. "We were at the game and having a good time with the kids and we heard a gunshot, and that pretty much ended the day. It's just sad that a positive event turned out to be a tragedy for the community as well as the family."

Penick added that the shooting didn't happen at the field and was not related to the game at the time. According to Bay News 9, authorities said a brief argument between J. Green and another man led to an altercation and the shooting. The shooter reportedly turned himself in shortly after the incident and claimed that he shot the rapper in self defense.

J Green was a rising local rapper who released his mixtape, Global, in 2014. The collection featured a song produced by in-demand producer Zaytoven. On July 20, Green posted to his Facebook page a request from Atlantic Records to send them a demo tape.

"The whole city is hurting right now," said his cousin Duane Temple following the passing of J Green.

We want to send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of J Green. May he rest in peace.
