If you thought being a “conscious” rapper meant being soft then you’ve never heard of Immortal Technique. The Harlem MC couples politically-minded rhymes with a battle rapper's aggression and he’s gotten worldwide respect because of it. His left-leaning lyrics and activism have made him an internationally respected artist and comrade to politically-minded fans all over.

Before there was A$AP Rocky there was Aesop Rock, an abstract, tongue-twisting MC from Long Island who was at the vanguard of NYC’s underground/indie rap renaissance of the late ‘90s and early 2000s. As a pillar of the now defunct Def Jux's roster, Aesop Rock became a go-to artist for fans of left field rap and lyricism.
