This was a pretty big year for Kat Dahlia as she dropped her debut album, My Garden, back in January. Today (July 29), the Cuban-American songstress turns 25 years old.

Although My Garden just came out, Dahlia has been actually been performing for years. She began rapping when she was 8, and after saving money from waitressing, she moved from Miami to New York in hopes of making. Born Katriana Sandra Huguet, she got the name Kat Dahlia because her manager thought it sounded sweet with a dark undertone.

After leaving a "toxic relationship," Dahlia debuted "Gangsta," which was a more aggressive effort than what her sound would eventually become. She got a spot at 2013's BET Music Matters showcase.

Dahlia released a few more singles and a mixtape before starting the hype for her debut album with the saccharine "Crazy."

Although My Garden flew under the radar, those who heard it found some similarities to some of her influences — a bit of Celia Cruz along with Janis Joplin. Hopefully, there's more music on the way from her.
