Gucci Mane Inspired by Maya Angelou on New Album?

Was Gucci Mane inspired by beloved author Maya Angelou on his new album? The rapper announced that his new album will be titled ‘The State vs. Radric Davis: The Caged Bird Sings,’ which seems to be a take on Angelou’s book, ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.’

Angelou named her 1969 autobiography ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings’ and the title is an homage to a poem by earlier laureate Paul Laurence Dunbar. It’s unclear if Gucci meant to make a literary message or nod to the beloved writer, especially with tracks like ‘Bad Bitch’ or ‘Buttnaked.’

It’s probably more likely that the name came from Gucci’s recent legal run-ins. The Atlanta rapper was indicted in federal court on two counts of possessing a firearm as a felon recently.

According to prosecutors, Gucci had a Taurus .45-caliber handgun and eight rounds of ammunition on Sept. 12, when he was arrested by police. Days later, he was found in possession of more guns and ammo. If convicted on both charges, the ‘So Icey’ creator faces a hefty 20 years in federal prison.

‘The State vs. Radric Davis: The Caged Bird Sings’ is slated for a Christmas Day release (Dec. 25).
