GQ Names Pharrell ‘Hitmaker of the Year’

As Pharrell Williams has made quite the name for himself this year with the production and guest appearances on two chart-topping singles — Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’ and Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’ — GQ has named the Virginia-born producer as “Hitmaker of the Year” in its annual December Men of the Year issue.

The upscale men’s magazine is recognizing Pharrell for his “incredible year” that started off as “business as usual,” but changed for the better when 2013 started to look a lot like 2001 and 2002. “What we didn’t expect was for him to dominate the nation’s collective speaker box the way he did back when Britney was a slave 4 us (2001) and Nelly found it hot in herre (2002),” says GQ writer, Mark Anthony Green.

According to GQ, Williams’ only competition on the charts this year was himself, and they’re right. Both tracks continued to go back and forth on the music charts, trying to prove which was the best of Pharrell’s work in the past 365 days. But happy just to continue creating good music, P had four simple sentences to say: “Both songs are for people who need a break,” he explains. “There’s a lot of f—ed-up travesty in the world. Sometimes you just need a Hallmark card. Sometimes you just need to shake your ass.”
