Artists in the hip-hop community are mourning the loss of beloved San Francisco DJ and designer Stephanie Ornelas also known as DJ Stef.

CBS SFBayArea reports that Ornelas died from a heart attack on Sunday (Oct. 1). She was 55 years-old. Under the alias, DJ Stef, Ornelas was known for her “nom de turntable” and a champion of the Bay Area music scene.

In the 1990s, Ornelas wrote, edited and published the Vinyl Exchange, a newsletter that informed readers of local events and the latest album releases from Bay Area artists and beyond. She would eventually morph the newsletter into an online website with the now defunct VinylExchange.com.

Ornelas continued to be a fixture in the San Francisco music scene, promoting rap concerts and DJing at local venues. She also pursued her second love of graphic design after studying at the UC Berkeley Extension. She launched her own business that offered web design, advertising assistance and illustration. She recently opened for DJ Prince Paul during his tour stop in San Francisco.

Upon hearing the sad news of Ornelas' death, hip-hoppers El-P, Prince Paul and more went on Twitter to send their heartfelt condolences. You can read some of the artist's tweets below.
