Drake Shows Acting and Rapping Chops on ‘SNL’
Drake was billed as the “musical guest” on last night’s (Oct. 15) ‘Saturday Night Live,’ but given that the Canadian superstar first found fame as an actor, it seemed likely he might surface in a couple of sketches.
Sure enough, Drizzy did equal amounts of rhyming and acting, performing two songs — ‘Headlines’ and ‘Make Me Proud,’ both from his forthcoming ‘Take Care’ album — and killing it in a pair of skits.
In the first of his comedy bits, the Young Money rapper appeared in one of ‘SNL’ cast member Andy Samberg‘s “digital shorts,” playing himself in a series of bizarre celebrity interviews. There was ‘An Extremely Brief Interview With Drake,’ ‘An Extremely Close Interview With Drake’ and ‘An Extremely Sarcastic Interview With Drake,’ in which Samberg used scare quotes when referring to his guest as a “musician.”
For the finale, ‘An Extremely Dark Interview with Drake,’ Samberg switched out the lights, adopted a demonic voice and sprung up from behind his guest’s seat, asking, “Are you afraid of the dark?”
Appearing later on the show’s ‘Weekend Update’ segment, Drake and cast member Jay Pharoah portrayed knucklehead teenagers dressed as werewolves. Fond of stealing candy from kids on Halloween, the two performed a rap song celebrating “bag jacking,” their thuggish hobby.
“Watch out, because like Republicans, I’m behind the bushes,” Pharoah rapped, dropping one of the funnier lines.
“I would trick or treat, but I’m too old now, so I snatch your bag so I don’t look like a pedophile,” Drake added later.
On the musical tip, Drake led with ‘Headlines’ and enlisted Nicki Minaj for his new hit, which he premiered earlier this week, ‘Make Me Proud.’ Nicki and her badonkadonk-accentuating neon outfit stole the performance, and when it was all done, Drake gave her a big kiss on the cheek, showing gratitude that required no acting.
