DMC of Run-D.M.C. was honored at the 29th annual Doing Art Together benefit at the Mandarin Oriental in New York on Monday (March 24). The veteran rapper was saluted for his work in bringing art to public schools.

The Doing Art Together program is dedicated to funding art education in public schools throughout New York City. At the event, students at the Thurgood Marshall Academy Lower School were able to show off their original artwork to attendees.

Later, DMC (aka Darryl McDaniels) spoke about his early childhood days doodling in his notebook in school, which would later inspire him to become a rapper. The 49-year-old artist also donated 15 signed copies of his comic book, which was created by his own comic-book company Darryl Makes Comics.

Doing Art Together board member Erin S. Gore, who is Co-Head of Wells Fargo’s National Education and Nonprofit Commercial Banking team, was also honored.
