The 2011 BET Hip-Hop Awards made more headlines for their cyphers featuring the likes of Slaughterhouse -- Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Royce da 5'9" and Crooked I -- Eminem, Estelle -- yes, she raps -- Nitty Scott, Pill, Busta Rhymes and a slew of others spitting off on-the-spot rhymes, than the performances that actually took place during the ceremony.

DJ Premier, one of hip-hop's lauded figures, didn't grab the mic during the talked about cyphers but he did man the turntables, serving up back beats for the rapping masses. While he welcomed most of those in attendance with open arms, there was one artist who he made sure didn't get a chance to shine: Justin Bieber.

The famed record spinner, who made a name for himself as part of the legendary group Gang Starr, spoke in detail in a radio interview regarding why he was not fond of having the pop star take a spot in one of the seven cyphers showcased this year.

"I was like, 'Yo, as long as he got a dope rhyme, let him spit," Premier said. "But then we heard, 'Oh, he wants Luda [Ludacris] to write his rhyme.' I was like, 'Oh no, no, no, no. If you ain't writing your own rhyme, you can't do it.' So Justin, you gotta take a backseat. Write your own rhymes, honey. You gotta call him honey on that one."

As far as the final decision over who gets in and who stays out, Preemo broke it all down. "They'll give me the list," he explained, referring to the lineup of artists. "We have arguments upon arguments. Shout to [President of Music Programming and Specials] Stephen Hill. Shout to [BET producer-writer] Jesse Collins. Believe me, we be arguing over who should be on it and all of that. Lots of big fights over the phone."

Looks like Biebs' rapping alter ego Shawty Mane will have to wait until next year's BET Hip-Hop Awards show to prove his lyrical skills -- not written by Ludacris, of course.
