Diddy and LL Cool J both got some shocking news when they appeared on the PBS series Finding Your Roots to unearth their family's history.

While the Bad Boy leader found out that his third-generation grandfather was not born a slave -- despite being born in Maryland, a slave state at the time.

“Make no mistake about it, man, this is not typical of the Black experience,” said the show's host, Henry Louis Gates. “For 90% of the African-American people who sat where you’ve sat when I’ve done their family tree -- no free ancestors.”

As for LL, the legendary emcee learned that his mother, Ondrea Griffith, was adopted. His grandparents, Eugene Griffith and Ellen Hightower, took the young woman in sometime during 1947 and also raised LL.

“This doesn’t change how I feel about the people that raised me,” said the Lip Sync Battle host of his grandparents. “I have more love and respect for them than I ever did.” LL’s mother also appears on the show and shared that she understands that her parents “had their reasons” for keeping the secret.

This full episode with Diddy and LL Cool J will air next Tuesday (Feb. 16), one day after LL Cool J is scheduled to host the Grammy Awards for the fifth time. Diddy, on the other hand, will be joining Pharrell's team as a mentor on The Voice.
