A gunman has reportedly shot and killed 27 people, 18 of whom were children, at an elementary school in Newton, Conn., earlier this morning.

The shooter, who is said to be in his 20s, first shot and killed his mother, a teacher at the school, then murdered 18 of her students and seven adults, before killing himself. The shooting is said to be among the worst in recent history.

As news of the tragedy spread through social networks this morning, the hip-hop community, oft criticized for promoting violent behavior, was quick to denounce the brutal killings.

Everyone from Waka Flocka Flame (no stranger to gun violence himself) and Lil Kim to Rihanna and Solange tweeted their condolences, offering prayers and demanding stricter gun laws.
