Common has a new name now -- it’s Oscar winner Common. That’s how Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning crew acknowledged the Chicago rhymer during this fun interview. Com is still beaming from his Academy Award win for Best Original Song for “Glory.” The Nobody’s Smiling creator also discussed a myriad of topics as well.

But back to the Oscars. Common was surprised at the reaction of the teary-eyed audience while he and John Legend were performing “Glory” live onstage. The rapper felt that the ancestors' spirit were present and it overpowered the crowd.

He revealed that his former rap rival Ice Cube congratulated him on his Oscar nomination before he won his coveted award. If you're a rap fan, then you would know about their historic rap feud back in the '90s. It’s good to hear that Com and Cube are supportive of each other's endeavors in Hollywood. “Man, I’m happy for you, you are doing it,” recalls Common of Cube’s congratulatory remarks.

However, Common was disappointed that Selma didn’t win an Oscar. But he did admit that he knew it wasn’t going to win the Best Picture honor. “We knew it would be a longshot,” he explains. “The movie studio kind of let us know the competition [was stacked against the film].”

The conversation then shifted to former girlfriends hitting him up after winning the Oscar. Common said both Erykah Badu and Serena Williams congratulated him on his win. “Serena came up to me and said, ‘Let me hold the Oscar,’” he recalls, to which Ebro joked, “and you told her, ‘Let me hold something, something.’” Oh, Ebro.

Common also talked about his 17-year-old daughter and how she introduces him to the new rappers she listens to. He’s also now leery of the guys she’s currently dating (like a good father should), but he’s proud of the young woman that she has become.

As for his dating life, Common is a happily single man. Ebro joked that he’s out in the streets bedding all kinds of women, which Common denied. “I go out on dates,” he said. “But I haven’t really found a woman that I want to settle down with.”

Now that Common has won an Oscar for music, the rapper said that he’s still working on perfecting his craft as an actor.

“I still go to [acting] workshops, because I want to grow and be one of the greats," he said. "When people say they have reverence and respect for [me] as an MC, I want to be one of those greats as an actor [as well].”

Oscar winner Common is simply great. Watch the interview above.
