A TV star turned serious hip-hop artist? It’ll never happen. We’re just kidding. Word to Drake. Like his rapping/singing/acting predecessor Donald Glover -- a.k.a. Childish Gambino -- has successfully made the transition from the small screen to your headphones, car stereo and laptop speakers. Combining a comedian's dark sense of humor with brutal self-awareness and clever pop culture references is CG's recipe for success. Already embraced by peers like Chance the Rapper, Bun B and Danny Brown, we predict he'll surprise a lot of people who think the kid from 'Community' can't spit.

The Flatbush Zombies aren't a household name just yet but they have made 'Thug Waffles' a part a lot hip-hop heads' well-balanced breakfasts. Named after the section of Brooklyn they're from, the group's made up of rappers Juice, the gravely-voiced Meech and sonic architect Erick Arc Elliot. They're pro-drugs like the rest of their Beast Coast brethren, but if you wrote them off as your run-of-the-mill weed heads and acid rappers after listening to their debut mixtape, 'D.R.U.G.S.,' then you've got them pegged wrong. Their recently-released 'Better Off Dead' goes a long way to show the crew's depth and showcase the rapping and production skills of Zombie Erick Arc Elliott.
